Drill readied for first dive in the Mothra Hydrothermal Field. The drill houses four barrels. An explosive charge is loded just before the dive so that if the drill gets stuck ina hole, a very small explosive charge initiates a cutter that truncates the drill. This has never been needed on any cruises using the drill in a diverse range of environments.
